My name is Natalie Burns, and I’m a multidisciplinary visual artist, illustrator, and writer with a deep love of narrative and storytelling.
I love creating works of fantasy, coming up with worlds, characters, and scenes, and have written, illustrated, and self-published three books. I keep a sketchbook and notebook on me at all times for observational drawing and collecting imagery and ideas to inspire my creative explorations.
Conceptually, I’m fascinated by the universal human experience of loneliness and find that it flavors much of my work. My most recent solo show, “Monophobia and Monophilia, exhibited at the David A. Howe Gallery in 2023, featured a collection of my work dealing with loneliness. The group show I participated in, “Entangled Roots” (also at the Howe Gallery in 2025), included work from my Wanderer Series, a collection of fantasy landscape paintings that all feature a lone traveler.
I’m interested in a long list of mediums (painting, drawing, digital art, filmmaking, collage, creative writing, etc, etc.), but what ties them together for me is narrative. While illustration is my primary expressive method, I’m really interested in telling stories with whatever medium most fits the story. I also love the versatility of working in both traditional and digital processes, and nearly all of my work combines elements of both. Most recently, I have illustrated a children’s book about the cat that lives at the David A. Howe Public Library, and I am in the process of completing a mural in the children’s wing of the same library.
When I’m not making art or writing, I love swimming and dancing, reading an excessive amount of fiction, and getting up to shenanigans with any or all of my eight siblings. I’m a big music nerd and love traveling with my uncle, who is also an independent artist (@art.jasonburns on Instagram). I live in a quiet, beautiful area of western New York with my two awesome cats, Digory and Polly. You can check out more of my work on my Linktree or reach out through the contact form below!
